Winter Composting
Winter composting requires a few adjustments but is entirely possible. Dungster was developed and perfected in Erie County Pennsylvania where winters are real and several feet of snowfall is normal.
Winter weather often requires horses and other livestock to be in stalls or in feed lots for longer periods and free grazing for less time. Also, manure management best practices have discouraged winter spreading of manure (for certain months or on frozen ground or other restrictions). Michigan went beyond “discouraging” and enacted a prohibition on manure spreading in the winter months.
Composting in the winter months, while requiring some extra attention to details, is entirely possible. A thermophilic phase Dungster composting dumpster will heat up to the required temperature in any month of the year. And some clever techniques allow it to perform nearly the same as it does in summer months.
The Dungster Operating Manual provides tips and techniques for winter composting.
